Vegan Cheese & Onion Crisps

Easy frugal potato peeling snack

Easy frugal potato peeling snack

This is one of those times that I kick myself and think ” WHY have I never done this before?!” Frugal. Quick. So unbelievably moreish I’m not sure I should share in case you all shout at me for getting you addicted. But I’m going to share anyway, they’re too good not to!

Potato peeling crisps. Why. Why has it taken me 33 years to discover these? They make perfect sense. Making something tasty ( though not exactly healthy) out of scraps that would normally be composted. A quick snack that satisfies a craving for cheese and onion flavour crisps ( chips for my American friends) without buying processed expensive junk. Continue reading →

Coconut Lemon Scrub

I’m a huge fan of natural toiletries , especially frugal (vegan of course) homemade ones. See why here. But I also want them to be effective and special. This coconut oil lemon sugar scrub ticks all the boxes. It’s refreshing, luxurious, sloughs off dead skin yet moisturises beautifully leaving skin glowing and smelling heavenly. Though it does always leave me craving lemon squares. Continue reading →

Vegan Lentil Lifesaver

Big pot of money and time saving nutritious goodies

Big pot of money and time saving nutritious goodies

I’m a diehard vegan foodie. I could talk about, make and eat (lots of) gorgeous vegan food all day everyday. My idea of a fun evening is curled up pouring over recipe books, making lists and menu plans to try and incorporate my experiments into our weekly budget. After all, what is life without some cruelty-free chocolate mousse or homemade pepperoni seitan vegan pizza?

Sometimes life throws curveballs and the budget gets stripped back to the bare bones or you don’t have time to indulge in fancy schmancy recipes due to higher priorities. That’s where it’s time to REALLY get inventive Continue reading →

DIY Play Kitchen Makeover On A Budget

From charity shop junk to bespoke play kitchen

From charity shop junk to bespoke play kitchen

I blame Pinterest. For most things actually. I can happily do without a tv, Facebook, barely check Twitter, never had an Instagram account and I’m still not entirely sure what Snapchat is. But please, never take away my beloved Pinterest. From ideas about simple tech-free living ( yes I’m aware of the irony) to elaborate party themes (fairy glades for a 1 yr old,j’accuse), it’s my spare time addiction. Luckily, that also provides me with tons of inspiration for most areas of my life, especially all things Coppertop related.

I’ve been drooling over play kitchen makeovers since Continue reading →

Why I Have A Natural Household

Allergies. Toxins. Pollution. Asthma. Cancer. All very familiar words that have been linked with modern lifestyles including chemically laden food, toiletries and cleaning products. From air fresheners linked to respiratory problems to the fact that 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream. More and more people are becoming conscious of what they ingest and surround themselves with.

I choose to make household cleaners and toiletries such as surface sprays, scouring powders, moisturisers, toothpaste etc for many reasons. Not only is it safer to have around children and pets,cruelty-free, frugal (not paying for expensive packaging either), but it’s more environmentally friendly.

Think about the cocktail of chemicals in most washing powders, shampoo, face scrubs (micro beads are devastating to waterways). Every time you do dishes, flush the toilet or do laundry you could be contributing to the poisoning of our water systems.

Toothpaste, fizzy toilet bombs, scouring powder, surface spray, hand soap, moisturiser and dry shampoo. Just some of our natural goodies we use

Natural products can be just as effective and smell incredible too thanks to the use of essential oils. I’m thrilled to be using safe, effective, frugal products in my home. Hopefully you will be too when you try my recipes from future posts. Happy cleaning!! 🙂

My Sanctuary

Do you have a place where you feel instantly calm yet uplifted the second you’re there? Where the worries of the world fade away and you can get lost in the moment? Well this is mine. Our family’s (non-working) farm that I visit weekly. The perfect place to unwind , where I come away feeling relaxed yet invigorated

image

Most people have at least one place like that and for many it involves being out in the elements. To feel the wind on your face, the noise of the birds, waves on a shore ,the babble of a mountain stream, the scent of a rose garden.

With the modern day hustle and bustle where a social life can mean a group of people staring at their phones in the same place for a few hours , it does wonders to be able to slow down and reconnect with the amazing natural world around you. To spend time noticing the way a butterfly flits from plant to plant or the way barley in a field bends and sways in the breeze ( see above photo), instead of worrying about emails, or Facebook notifications, deadlines and to do lists.

I say everybody should find a similar sanctuary, go there, switch off your phone for a day ( ok a few hours if that’s unthinkable) and take time to recharge. Also why I’m working on creating a life where that’s incorporated into the daily routine , make it the norm , not the exception. I’m not sure who said it but this quote springs to mind  ” Instead of planning a vacation, plan a life you don’t need to escape from” …

Butterfly Watermelon Cake

So, here it is. My first blog post!! I wanted to keep it short and sweet while I get to grips with using a new form of technology ( any form of technology usually scares me so this a big deal , applause please!).

I decided to share the wonderful refreshing ‘cake’ I made for Coppertop’s 1st birthday ( how is it possible that was 2 years ago,HOW?!) made completely from fresh fruit and a little imagination. It was ridiculously hot here in Ireland that July and this was just what we needed, especially with a teething baby who loved sucking on frozen watermelon cubes to help her gums

Butterfly Watermelon Cake

All you need to do is cut the ends off a watermelon, slice off the rind and cut into a cylinder. Cut cylinder in half and place curved sides against each other , cut out butterfly wings. Use toothpicks to secure blueberries and kiwi slices in place. Set on a bed of romaine lettuce leaves.Done!! Serve to grateful overheated family. If you made it through this, thank you so much for reading and supporting this new venture , I love you all 🙂
